You can configure many aspects of the actual build process, including which compilers to use and how to configure them, which build tool to use, if you want to use one, which version of the compiler to use, if you want to use a different version, how to configure a third party library, etc. There's even a make install target that will install the build products into a directory relative to prefix. The build process is invoked in a clean chroot that is located in CONFIG_DIR, which defaults to /usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r). A typical CONFIG_DIR directory contains Makefile files that describe how to build the kernel and all of its modules. For example, the directory /usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r) contains many subdirectories. Each subdirectory is a kernel release. The Makefile file in each subdirectory of the kernel release describes how to build the kernel and all of its modules. The Makefile files in subdirectories of the kernel release are typically not included in the build process when the kernel is built. Instead they are built by a separate configure script and make program. In order to build the kernel modules, the kernel source code (Linux) is usually first compiled into a library (lib), which is done in each subdirectory of the kernel release using the configure script. The configure script then invokes a program named make-kpkg to build a kernel. The program make-kpkg 827ec27edc
