The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus that forms an image on a recording medium by developing an electrostatic image formed on an image carrier with a toner containing a carrier, and an image forming method.

2. Related Art

An image forming apparatus such as a copying machine forms an electrostatic latent image on a surface of an image carrier, develops the electrostatic latent image with a toner, and transfers the toner image to a recording medium (such as a sheet of paper) to obtain an image. There is a case where a part of the toner is fixed to the image carrier, and there is another case where the toner is not fixed to the image carrier.

In the former case, the toner is provided to the image carrier as a wet toner by applying a blade made of urethane rubber or the like to the surface of the image carrier so as to remove the toner from the image carrier, and then the toner is agitated with the carrier and mixed with the carrier on the image carrier to produce a developer (hereinafter, referred to as a wet toner). If the wet toner is used, a large amount of the carrier is incorporated into the toner, and therefore the carrier is available relatively in a small amount. Hence, there is an advantage that a high-quality image can be obtained.

However, the toner is scraped by the blade, and therefore there is a problem that the toner is detached from the image carrier by the blade, and then the toner is attached to a part, such as the blade, that rubs against the image carrier, thereby causing a scratch on the image carrier and a stain on the image carrier. Further, there is a problem that the carrier is incorporated into the toner, and therefore the toner is deteriorated in a long-term use.

In the latter case, the toner is provided to the image carrier as a dry toner by charging the toner in a toner hopper and a developing sleeve, and then the toner is agitated with the carrier on the image carrier to produce a developer. Then, the toner is heated and fused on the image carrier, and then the toner is transferred to the recording medium.
